PAST EXHIBITION
Warwick Wine Estate

Caroline Kappers
African Chalice - Wine Art Paintings
In her new body of work titled ‘African Chalice’, Caroline Kappers works with the mercurial qualities of red wine as a watercolour combined with imported archival wine inks and acrylic coloured ink to explore figurative portraits with a vibrant sense of colour and design.
Inspired by African textiles and the Warwick Wedding Cup this collection, to be exhibited at Warwick Wine Estate, stays true to the host in celebrating the abundant Chalice of Life. Well-known artist Marié Stander will open the exhibition.
Wine art is made possible by using wine produced from estate vineyards that is reduced and transformed into a paint medium. It is a unique and highly technical form of painting because as the wine paint matures the painting takes on a different form and texture. As a result it is a medium that takes time and patience to capture the artists full intent and complexion. Caroline combines this homegrown paint with specialist wine art colours to add to the depth of expression and the long-term investment of her paintings.
Born in 1971 in Cape Town, Caroline lives and works in Stellenbosch. Her artistic journey has come full circle from art student through to formal graphic design and a career as a commercial designer and marketer. She has returned to expressionist fine art and is being recognised for her wine-made-art and Bokeh style large and small format paintings. Caroline captures life’s journey through the eyes of a lens and brings them to life on canvas with a soft romantic and captivatingly emotive style.
Caroline has showcased her work in galleries and at exhibitions around the world and is published in the 2014 edition of ‘The Collector’s Guide to Art and Artists in South Africa’. This solo exhibition is her greatest ambition and a humbling milestone in her artistic journey.
Caroline captures the essence of the muse, the moment and the emotion exquisitely.

Claire Denarie Soffietti
A Solo Exhibition of Paintings
Claire Denarie Soffietti was born and raised in Versailles, France and has lived in Italy, Barbados and South Africa. Her appreciation for the abundant beauty and natural resources of South Africa spurred a great fascination with the African continent. Claire expresses no desire to create naturalistic depictions of the ‘real’ world. Colour undoubtedly plays a fundamental role in making her emotionally charged works particularly unique and memorable. The tendency towards pure, bold colours could be attributed to the ideals of subjective use of colour shared by the early 20th Century Fauves painters that influence her. Claire has been known to describe nature as ‘mysterious and perfect’ something which 'ought to remain untouched’ This attitude is reflected in the bold, fresh simplicity of her paintings. While she is instinctively swayed to look to the grotesque of human nature, the subtlety in revealing these inner attitudes preserves the beauty of her work. Though her paintings occasionally feature iconic figures, they always retain a certain enigmatic disposition. Claire has exhibited on both local and international platforms including the Agora Gallery in Chelsea, New York. Top Billing, as well as Habitat Magazine and House and Garden have featured her work.

Dominique Edwards
Buikspraak/Gutspeak
Commune.1 presents an exciting new body of work by Dominique Edwards that has been two years in the making. The exhibition will span the entire gallery space and is executed using a range of both traditional and unconventional materials including ink on paper, photography, video projection, packing tape, found objects, hand-made paper, automated dowsing rods, glue, mops, plastic and more. Buikspraak, translated literally into English as ‘gutspeak’ or, by definition, as ventriloquism, is used in both literary and colloquial contexts to question the sincerity behind the voice. Edwards explores the visceral signals (e.g. gut feelings) that bypass the rational and ideologically infused language centres of the brain and point instead to a phenomenology of presence, complicated by questions of agenda and authenticity: what is the gut, who is the puppeteer, when it speaks, who do I hear - how many voices inhabit this frilly place?

Portrait Painting Workshop
My approach to teaching:
I am very open to the individual concerns of each artist. Artists are empowered when the basics are learnt yet each artist has a unique approach and voice that needs to be attended to.
Painting in a group and attending a workshop can be an intimidating process but this does not need to be the case as painting is a learning process which must be one of trial and error. This is the approach that I take with me every day while painting and encourage throughout the workshop.
If you have any questions, please email me on gracekotze@gmail.com or phone 0825605045.
Who are the workshops for:
The workshops are aimed at all artists from beginners to established.
The courses are also applicable to other subjects as they teach basic painting methods applicable to any subject. I am very happy to accommodate the individual’s personal concerns even if they deviate from the subject.
Format of each day:
There will be a morning and afternoon session broken by lunch and two teas.
The workshop will be aided by examples of paintings, demonstrations, daily screen presentations and a number of books.
Catering
Each session will be broken by a tea and light lunch in the middle of the day. All are provided for by myself.
Times:
Saturday 10.00am – 4.00pm
Sunday 10.00am – 4.00pm
Reference and materials:
On booking I will let you know what photos etc. are required.
Cost for course:
The workshop is slightly more than my other workshops to cover the cost of the model.
R1 300.00 for two day course.
Booking for the course is essential and a 50% deposit ensures a place two weeks prior to the course. But please contact me before the deposit is paid to ensure there is still room. The deposit will not be refunded unless I am able to find replacement artists.
The remaining 50% to be paid no later than the first day of the course.

Bettie Coetzee-Lambrecht
STILL/LIFE IN MOTION - A Portrait of Time Passing
Bettie Coetzee Lambrecht's new photo-book, STILL/LIFE IN MOTION - A Portrait of Time Passing, will be launched on 3 September at 17:30 for 18:00 by Dr Elbé Coetsee. Photo's from the book will be part of a solo-exhitibition until 30 October. September 3 is a First Thursday Open Art Gallery evening when galleries in the City Bowl open their doors until about 20:00.
The exhibition comprises a selection of images from the book, STILL/LIFE IN MOTION and interrogates the effects of time/ageing on body and mind, similar to the erosive processes in nature. Divided into clusters, each governed by a particular emotion, the images allude to our contradictory attitudes towards natural forces in both our physical environment and our bodies. We mostly experience the former with awe; the latter with fear and displeasure.
Fourteen professionals, including doctors and professors, actors, musicians, ballet dancers, teachers and visual artists agreed to perform in front of a camera. They collaborated in a project which stretched over a period of nearly three years. The initial aim, to explore different professions through the prism of ‘moving bodies’, grew into an expression of emotions associated with the process of coming to grips with ageing. STILL/LIFE IN MOTION finally metamorphosed into and exploration of the paradoxes of growing old and living young.
The craft of fine art photography is also highlighted by similar works presented as prints on different surfaces and produced through different techniques. There is for instance a marked difference in our experience of an art work, caused by the effect of different printing, mounting and framing methods. Printed as giclee (digital ink jet) or chemical light jet prints on varied surfaces like different types of archival paper, silk or metal, affect not only production costs but, more importantly, our emotional response to the final product.
All works are serialised, that is, a limited number of prints from the same digital negative are made and signed. This is similar to the serialised presentation of other forms of graphic art, as for instance, etching, lithography and screen printing. These prints are all original works - not copies. The word ‘copy’ is applicable, when unauthorised duplicates of the editioned works are made.
Bettie enjoyed a rich career juggling her way through different professions including specialist journalism, art reviewing and academic research while teaching Art History at the University of Johannesburg. Over the past five years she has switched from writing to indulging hands on, a new interest: fine art photography.

Kirsten Beets
Everyday Eden
A solo exhibition of paintings by Kirsten Beets. The starting point for Everyday Eden was the word ‘Jungle’ which led to an exploration of the ‘Urban Jungle’. I wanted to investigate the space that I inhabited, namely Cape Town. It is a city in which I live and work and it became a challenge to draw inspiration from the overly familiar sights and sounds. This forced me to look deeper at my surroundings and since Nature and the natural world has always been an inspiration, I started to wonder if there was any wilderness hiding among the everyday. Slowly I began to take note of the in-between spaces. For the first time I observed the exotic palm tree with a cityscape peeking out behind it. Everyday scenes of nature previously overlooked, uncelebrated yet beautiful in their own way. In my paintings I have tried to convey the feeling of these places, a kind of strangeness within a familiar environment. For me these spaces represent Edens or little islands of lost paradise complete with their own fauna and flora. Not all the works are from Cape Town, some were inspired by travels. In each I tried to celebrate the Everyday Edens I found along the way.

EXHIBITUS
EXHIBITUS is the second solo exhibition by Cape Town artist Lucie de Moyencourt. Self-taught, this show pays homage to her informal and idiosyncratic art-training. De Moyencourt's work was developed through the art of observation in her daily life, as well as by being exposed to European art from a young age through visits to her family in France.
In this show, Lucie takes us with her on a recent Summer trip to Europe. Her ink drawings are her diary and act as an itinerary of her travels. We are given access to the great Museums and Galleries of Europe through her paintings and we gain insight into which works the artist herself is drawn to. Lucie not only pays attention to the works displayed in these famous collections; she shifts her gaze to observe the way visitors in galleries interact with the works on the wall.
The show acts as more than just a recording of gallery visits - it also highlights the tension between art history and technology, the image and the making of the image and ultimately the masterpiece and the mundane.

Desireé Brand
Unique Visual Narratives from Namaqualand
Body mapping has been used for many thousands of years by people who want to get a better understanding of themselves, their bodies and their relationship with the world they live in. Practically, the artist makes an outline of his/her body on card board, paper or linen, then continues to fill in the body map with paint or collage, communicating to the world about themselves, their bodies and what they want to say to the world, that which they cannot often articulate in words. The art of body mapping has been used as a therapy for those suffering from trauma or life threatening illnesses. During the process artists learn from each other by example. It is a very non-invasive process which allows great artistic freedom.
Desiree Brand collaborates with artists from the Olifants River community to produce life size body-maps. Thirty artists, ranging from farm labourers, residents from both the townships and the towns in the region, volunteered to participate in creating their own visual art narratives with the objective of sharing their story with the world. The work speaks for itself through visual and verbal testimonies executed in paint and collage.
Desiree Brand will also facilitate public workskhops and conduct walkabout as part of the exhibition. Body Mapping workshops will be held on Tuesday, 9 August 2016 to celebrate National Woman’s Day and on Saturday, 27 August. The workshops are process driven. It is about exploring the concept of self in relation to external influences. Applications to participate in any of the workshops can be sent to desireebrandsculpture@gmail.com and must include a motivational letter of 250 – 300 words. Only 10 participants can be accommodated at each of the workshops. Diversity reflecting the South African population will be a consideration in the process of selecting the participants.
